We were out of town during the fire and resulting evacuation. I kept tabs on the fire via the internet. Seeing the line of fire trucks on Cathedral Oaks put a lump in my throat. I couldn’t believe what was happening at home. When I first told my mother about the fire, she said she would pray for our home. I could only pray for the safety of all of you. Our area was evacuated, but with us not there, our car was not even moved to safety. All would have been lost. I am so thankful for your hard work and dedication. You saved so much. You saved our homes, our memories, and made our futures safe. We are eternally grateful for each and every one of you. God Bless.

We would like to add our thanks to everything that has already been expressed. Like many others, we lived through the Painted Cave Fire and knew the potential damage that could be caused by flames powered by sundowner winds.
The fiery images of our hills burning on Wednesday and Thursday, July 2nd and 3rd will be forever etched in our minds. At that time it was hard not to believe that the entire Goleta community would be destroyed because the tasks associated with controlling the fire (which appeared to be moving quickly in 4 different directions) seemed overwhelming and nearly impossible.
Because we live between Patterson and Fairview we evacuated on July 3rd and 4th. When we returned home on July 5th, despite all of the ash still moving through the air and on most outdoor surfaces, Goleta looked as though it had been cleansed by some amazing force. We were so relieved for ourselves and for so many others that the fire had been miraculously contained to a great extent, and the depth of our gratitude for the selfless and hard work of the firefighters and other emergency personnel cannot be expressed in words. We thank you, we admire you and your dedication and your courage, and we will never forget that you saved us.
A special thanks also to the Santa Barbara Independent for timely and extremely interesting reporting on the fire. And to Ray Ford: You are a most important guardian of the geography and the spirit of the lands that surround us, and your fire-related articles were something special that only you could have created. They were works of art at a time of extreme distress, and we thank you for memorializing a very frightening experience in a way that captured the complexity of what was happening along with the unusual characters and abilities of the on-the-ground firefighters as well as others who worked and managed the fire in other capacities.
The air is becoming cleaner and we are all healing due to all of the heroic efforts of so many people.
Our very deepest thanks,
Paula Rudolph, Mark French and Penny

We will always be grateful to all the firefighters and the unsung heroes who saved us from disaster.

I was really struck by the sense of community that was evident during the fire. In addition to the fire fighters, I would like to say thanks to all the folks and neighbors in Goleta who offered help and kind words as they themselves were unsure of what the future would bring. Viva la Goleta!

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU we are so happy to be home. When we left about 9 pm on the 3rd with the flames so close on the opposite ridge and the crazy winds, we said good bye to our house and called again for the kitty who was hiding. The next morning the house was still there and we got the cat to the Humane Society, Now a week later the house is still standing and we are all back home. Thank you for being away from your homes for so long to help us and all the other threatened communities in California, Lynn

My 12-year old neighbor (Nimisha Shinday) and I made this sign this morning.
We live in Las Varas Canyon and we are incredibly grateful for all of the hard work that the firefighters did to save our home.
I have never met a more calm, professional, or kind group of people, every single one.
People think of the fire as “over,” but they are still hard at work (I am writing as of Saturday July 11th at 5:45 pm). There are helicopters flying over our house approximately every 5 minutes as they dip into a neighboring reservoir for water. They have been doing this every afternoon and evening until sundown and it continues today.
I wish there was more we could do for the firefighters. We wish to express our deep gratitude to them, and to their families for living without their presence while they were here protecting our lives, our property, and our town.

Please know that it was with great relief, joy, almost, that we watched six or seven big firetrucks rumble up through our neighborhood during the first days of the Gap Fire. To those of us whose homes were destroyed in the Painted Cave Fire in 1990, it meant that you all knew that we were here and that we would not be burned out again without a fight. Thanks to you all for your great work.

We were threatened by the Zaca fire last year and were amazed at the results of the fire fighting brigade in saving Santa Barbara and the surrounding areas! Words can’t describe how much you are appreciated by us. We experienced a house fire (unrelated to causes by wildfires) about 3 years ago in Santa Barbara and it is hard to explain what a loss that is so once again, thanks for saving so many homes and people’s livelihood. You are heroes in the truest sense of the word.
Sincerely,

Our family wishes to thank everyone involved in keeping our families and homes safe when the Gap Fire came down the hill, way too close for comfort… From near and far, we saw fire trucks and teams dedicated from all over the state, and we are greatly appreciative for all that you do, especially in dangerous situations like these.
With much gratitude,

There are so many to thank for standing strong for our community during the exceptionally trying times since the Gap Fire commenced on Tuesday, July 1. We live in the North Patterson area and were in northern California when word came of our mandatory evacuation. Our yellow labrador was being cared for by our neighbor who assured us he would not leave without the dog. Somehow he managed to load his 89- year-old mother, his wife, some personal belongings and our dog into his Honda Civic and transport everyone to his brother’s home in Ventura until the evacuation order was lifted on Sunday. Our neighbor is our personal hero, but the efforts put forth by the fire crews; the Red Cross; Direct Relief International; Dos Pueblos and San Marcos High Schools; Santa Barbara Animal Shelter; Earl Warren Showgrounds; law enforcement; media; and the many businesses; non- profits; and individuals who have been involved in the relief effort are to be supremely commended for a job well done. Thank you all for your personal sacrifices! Linda Perlin

I want to personally thank all of the firefighters who fought down the Gap Fire in Goleta over the past couple weeks. I do not live near the fire, but I do live in a heavily wooded canyon that is potentially ripe for the same situation. It is inspiring to know so many men and women from near and far worked extremely hard to help our community. Thanks again!

Thank you to all of you for your valiant efforts. We, on Las Tunas and environs, are not burning (yet), but we know our situation here is similar to those under the Gap fire, and we watched with apprehension, then relief and gratitude. To all of the firefighters who have helped with or are still working on the gap fire:
I cannot thank you enough for your efforts in this fire.
I live in Winchester Canyon and have owned a home there for several years. Thanks to the reverse 911 warning/evacuation calls and your updates to the media, my wife and two children were able to safely load up our cars with our valuables and travel to our in-laws down in Ventura County, away from the smoke and ash. We are now safely back home thanks to your heroism.
I hear the fire is 55% contained and that we are no longer the state’s top priority fire. I pray that our fire and the rest of the fires burning in this state can soon be extinguished so you can go back to your local communities and be with your loved ones.
Thanks again for all that you do.

As stress and fatigue and the fear of the unknown set in, I realized that I had little control over how events unfolded, but I began to have great faith and trust in the men and women - professionals and volunteers alike - fighting this fire at all levels. They know what they’re doing and they have the intelligence and stamina and instincts to boldly go - rivaling anything the crew of the Enterprise could do.
In fact, I think you did a damn fine job saving our little universe and Captain Kirk would be totally jealous.
Thank you so much!

If I could have swaddled myself in watery veil and hand-delivered ice-cold lemonades to each of you, I would have. Or, if I could invite each of you to my home for dinner, I would. But I probably can’t, and that’s ok because it’s the thought that counts. Every time I see a truck I throw you guys a thumbs up, and you definitely deserve waaaaay more than that for protecting our homes and hillsides. Thanks so much for your relentless work. We deeply appreciate you, and also thank your communities for sharing you with us.

Dear ALL fire fighters and support crews involved in saving our city!
Your hard work and effort is SO appreciated!!!! Our family would like to thank especially the fire fighter from Santa Fe Springs that came into our back yard on Via Salerno last Thursday night! While we were being evacuated from our cul de sac this WONDERFUL man was SO reassuring and calming to our entire family as we hurredly loaded our cars! As we left he calmly told us that they would do everything they could to save our home! He has NO idea how much that meant to me/us! Thank you for your kindness!
Also, a BIG thank you to Tony White from Brush Truck #330 for all he did while fighting the fire right in our neighborhood! You ALL ARE OUR HEROES and the city continues to be SO amazed and proud of all of you for saving so many homes!
Please stay safe and THANK YOU, again…….. From the Darke Family!!!

I am in awe of what you have done for our community…and so many others. Working in unimaginable conditions you fought that fire that we saw racing down the hill. Not a single home burned…I would never have guessed that as we prepared to leave last Thurs. in conditions that were similar to the Painted Cave fire. We cannot thank you enough for you bravery, hard work and dedication. You are the best and define what real heroes are. Thank you!!

The gratitude we will always feel towards you is something that is truly importatnt, and unforgettable.

Thank you for your heroics in saving our neighborhood. We are deeply grateful for your hard work and professionalism. Even the thought of being homeless with three children under five was scary. Dear Firefighters,
Thank you so much for all of your hard work in keeping us and our home safe. My family and I live in Rancho Embarcadero and it was quite scary to see the flames creeping closer and closer to the avocado orchard. While the flames were growing, fire trucks drove up Vereda del Ciervo, Vereda Leyenda and Vereda del Padre and positioned themselves in various driveways and roadways. We were then told to leave. While I was driving out of the canyon that night I saw many fire trucks from many different areas and I thought to myself, thank you, thank you for coming to our rescue!

Thank you is not enough.
Tears of fear and joy have fallen over the last week in our household of 3 kids, my husband and I.
Our prayers have been centered on the safety of the crews on the ground and in the air. As well as your families you have waiting for you at home.
My house is important, my things are important but they are all replaceable.
You, the men and women fighting this fire are not replaceable and we are so very, very thankful that you choose to be here helping protect what is important to us.
As a former firefighter for CDF- now CalFire, which is very odd to me ;o)- I am ever grateful that we had so many responders in our neighborhood so quickly.
This fire has brought back a rush of memories for me, fighting fires in Northern California for years before getting married and starting a family.
My brother is a firefighter for Modesto Fire and is out on a fire in Humboldt County so safety of you all is first and foremost on my mind.
The reality of what our fire season is going to be this year is hitting home. Our prayers will continue to be with you through this long upcoming season.
Having grown up in California, fire is not a new thing for my family. We have been lucky enough to not be scathed by any of the seasonal fires we have had near us. Always being protected by courageous, strong men and women like you. First out to the fire, last to leave (usually after you’re bored for a day or two and ready to move on).
This fire, the Gap Fire, has been a different story. Only one other time did we actually think we would have to evacuate during a fire. This time, we were all packed up and waiting for the call. Over a week later and that call never came. Our neighboring housing tract was called but thankfully we were not.
All due to the hard work of the responders on this fire.
Thank you, thank you, thank you!

I hope that all of you involved in fighting the Gap Fire, and ALL the fires recently raging throughout the state, know how very much the public appreciates all that you do. When I think of heroes, firefighters are usually right at the top of the list, along with soldiers and policemen. I’m amazed and grateful that there are people willing to risk their lives and work in absolutely terrifying and laborious conditions on a daily basis. Yet, if it were not for people like you, our country, our civilization as a whole, would be at peril. Thank you from the bottom of the hearts of all us who treasure you, respect you, and value you and all you do beyond measure.

I was there on Monday and was very impressed with the excellent job firefighters and everyone else working on the fire had done to save Goleta and Santa Barbara, save lives, and save houses. We live far from Goleta, in Montrose, Colorado, but with family in Santa Barbara and Goleta and a nephew who is a Santa Barbara firefighter, we have been watching the news and phoning daily to see how things are going.
My heart is full of gratitude for each and every one of you – for the firefighters, pilots, police, and other personnel who put their lives on the line every day to save the homes and lives of people you don’t even know.
The definition of “hero” from the dictionary is “a man (and I’m adding ‘woman’ as well) of great strength and courage, admired for nobility or exploits….honored for outstanding qualities.”
Each one of you fits that definition. Thank you, thank you. We honor and salute you, and pray daily for your safety.

I first noticed the fire at about 6:30 on the day it started. We were driving down the freeway on our way to dinner. I said, “Mommy, Daddy, look at the smoke! There’s a fire! Call someone. Do you think they know about it? Should we call 911?” Do you know what they said to me? They, said, “Look there’s already a helicopter up there. Don’t worry. The fire will probably be out by the time we leave the restaurant.” But it wasn’t. It kept growing. The next day it had gone from ½ acre to 10 acres to over a hundred acres. I was really scared. Then, we started to hear about all of the firefighters that were coming to help fight the fire. Still the fire grew. The smoke was so black and awful and it was right over our house!
Then they told us we were warned about evacuation. I helped pack up my special things. My parents took me and my brother to our grandparent’s house in Camarillo so we would be able to sleep. The next day, they got evacuated. But, guess what? Then the very next day we got to go home! Everything was covered with ash, but everything was OK.
Thanks to you our home is still standing and we are safe. Thanks so much for all of your hard work fighting the fire.

To the firefighters of the Gap Fire:
My family and I thank you from the bottom of our hearts for putting yourselves in the way of danger for hours and hours every day this past week to keep us all safe and to preserve the houses that hold the precious memories of our lives together.
I am overwhelmed by gratitude when I think of you local firefighters who have been battling the blaze from the beginning, and when I think of you hundreds of firefighters who came on short notice from 41 states, strangers to our area, who came to lend a hand. You are part of our community now, too: you have made a lasting contribution here. Your generosity toward people you don’t even know has made a big impression on my family, especially my young son.
We are on La Patera south of Cathedral Oaks, and watched the fire from our front yard when it started. Your work has been amazing. We cheer for you every day at the progress you have made!

Dear firefighters,
One month after moving in, we evacuated above Cathedral Oaks for three days. But we came back to a still-standing house. The chief later said that he thought “100-plus” homes might have been lost. We were geographically within “the plus.”
We owe our domestic future and overall well-being to the brave men and women who made the stand and saved our dream home. You did this, on the ground and in the air, night and day, day after day. With your skill and fortitude, you had our back. Know that we have yours going forward.

To the awesome, tireless, dedicated, tenacious firefighters-
Thank you for your hard work on the Goleta Gap fire. I have family one block from an evacuation area, thus hourly I watched and read the reports. It is amazing how you battled this fire without loss of life. I know many of you came from fighting Big Sur and were physically taxed, yet you persevered to fight another fire. Daily you put your lives on the line for the community. The sad part of this story is that the fire was most likely caused by human error, and for that, your lives along with all the homes in the area were at risk. You firefighters are true courageous heroes.

I’m sure that responding to a fire is often grueling, dirty, and thankless work. Much of it is cutting fire lines, clearing brush, and standing guard, sometimes in the middle of the night and under clouds of smoke and waves of heat. But those of us in the community want you to know how much we appreciate your efforts. Without you, much of the southwest would bee virtually uninhabitable.

My husband and I were in Vancouver Canada when we received the phone message from our 19 year old daughter who was home alone (with the cat). She did an outstanding job of evacuating our house by herself , but if it hadn’t been for you all, to slow the path of the fire, we wouldn’t have had a home to come back to.
My son is a fireman with the city of Sacramento and he puts his life on the line every day that he is on duty. I constantly pray for his safety and yours as well. Thank you very much for all that you do, EVERY DAY!
God Bless you all.

The name of our site has changed to more accurately reflect the reality that you have been expressing - that there are many agencies that have been and continue to be responsible for our safety and well-being. Public servants from the Santa Barbara County Sheriff, California Highway Patrol, American Red Cross and other agencies have made sacrifices for our safety, and they deserve our thanks just as much as firefighters do. The next time you see someone in uniform, wave and say thanks. It could make their day.
Hat tip to Sharon from SBSO - thanks for the chat today.

Dear Firefighters,
God Bless all Firefighters. Without your tireless fighting we would be in peril. Let alone how time and time again you go beyond the call of duty out of the goodness of your hearts by simply pulling a few items here and there out of homes, or saving a pet, and so much more…. We appreciate your hard work and your kind hearts.
Sincerely. Lori Bonneau

Thank you for all that you have done to help our community. I work at San Marcos High School and have seen the dedication from the perspective of the Red Cross. I know those people were there because you have spent your time saving their homes. Thank You for all that you do for all the communities within and around Goleta and Santa Barbara — I have many friends who would have been devastated had it not been for you and all of your timeless labor and intelligence and love.
Sincerely,

We are in Chicago, far from the flames. But with friends in California, we stay glued to the news from the west coast. It is hard to comprehend the bravery it takes to move towards a fire rather than flee from from it. Our prayers are with each of you as you risk your own lives to save others.

MANY THANKS FROM THE TROUT CLUB!!
I was completely amazed by the firefighting efforts that took place not only to save our community, but also the thousands of other homes in the fire’s path. On Thursday night, after being evacuated, my neighbors and I watched from the perch at the top of Old San Marcos Road as the firefighters and air crews battled a seemingly impossible blaze. The fire was billowing up the hill and threatening to cross over into the San Jose Creek Canyon. It was an amazing sight! The flames where huge, and the air crews were simply heroic. We watched as long as we could, but eventually had to leave the mountain with only our prayers for the fire crews and our homes. Some of us returned on Friday and the authorities allowed us to stay and watch. We were very grateful and relieved to see that the fire crews had kept the fire out of that canyon, only to discover that the threat had not completely vanished. Friday ended up being another heck of a day where air crews pelted our mountainside with fire retardant. We watched them drop layer after layer on the ridge of the canyon. We were thoroughly impressed with the precision and timing of the air drops. This is what saved our canyon, our homes, and other homes down wind of our neighborhood. The communication between air crews and ground crews seemed flawless. It was spectacular to watch, and our whole community is extremely grateful from the bottom of our hearts! I would also like to commend the ground crews that went in on Saturday and Sunday to put out the spot fires, everything seemed very thorough and well planned. Finally, I would like to give extra kudos to our VERY, VERY, BRAVE Volunteer firefighters who stayed every night in our community, foaming down our houses, turning off propane tanks, and just simply being there for us all!! We love you dearly!!!
Thank U, Thank U!!

Thank you so much for saving us from another disaster like the Painted Cave fire…I have friends who have been in both fires, and we are so grateful that you are here to protect us and our property. The emergency responders in Santa Barbara county are the greatest, and joined by fire fighting crews from all over who are as great, you have been heroic in keeping us safe. Thank you.

To each firefighter, crew member and volunteer - THANK YOU !!!
I grew up in Santa Barbara with the folks that attended Hope School, La Colina and San Marcos. In the mid-1960s we watched as the Coyote Fire raced over La Cumbre Peak and threatened our homes. You saved them as you are saving many today.
We still have family there and appreciate your passion, unending efforts, and plain guts. You have given us peace of mind. God bless, and please stay safe.
Thanks again,

Firefighters, it is with open hearts that we embrace your boundless virtue and courage. I hope you never tire of hearing how much we appreciate you. We are all so grateful to each of you for putting your lives on the line to fight the Gap Fire. It was terrifying to stand three doors down in the street with neighbors and witness an immense fire moving towards our friends in the North Fairview area Wednesday night. Thank you for protecting my stubborn friend who refused to leave her horses and her home on Holiday Hill. If I had known that she had gone out and stockpiled supplies after I called her Tuesday night (because I was worried about her), I would have been beside myself and would have called her endlessly to reason with her. I know you were close to her. She told me she could see you next door.
I grew up on the Gulf Coast and lived through many hurricanes. With a hurricane there is no negotiation with nature and no idea of what may happen. But a fire is so fast and furious and terrifyingly destructive, and yet, there you are, standing it off with intelligence and courage in ways we can barely imagine. Thank you, thank you, thank you for protecting our family and our friends throughout Goleta.
with our deepest gratitude,
Martha B., Fairview @ Cathedral Oaks

Considering the difficulty of fighting this fire, everything seems to have gone as well as it could have, thanks to the firefighters and all the people working to protect our community! I live half a mile south of Cathedral Oaks, just west of Fairview, so I never even had to evacuate! We appreciate your unflagging efforts, night and day. For those of you who are continuing to fight this fire, keep up the amazing work. We all all so grateful.
For those of you who came from afar, welcome to the South Coast! It’s usually a lot nicer, and we hope you can stay a while to enjoy it.

Thanks hardly expresses our gratitude to the many first responders who saved our homes and our community from the Gap Fire. We were evacuated on Thursday evening from our home on upper North Patterson on a moment’s notice–in a scene, as someone has said, reminiscent of what one imagines in the last days of Pomeii. We returned on Sunday to a miracle–our houses intact with the surrounding hillsides scorched to bare earth. This miracle is due to the professional and valiant efforts of so many firefighters. We’ve heard stories of their heroics to save homes on Camino Manadero and Old San Marcos Road. We’ve watched every evening from friends’ house east of Hwy 154 as spot fires flared up on the dark mountainside and seemingly tiny headlights from firetrucks bear down on each and every one of them until they are extinguished. You are a blessing in our lives and we humbly thank you for the many sacrifices you and your families make in order for you to protect us. May your good work return to bless you a thousand fold.

It seems so cliche to say but, it is true: words can not express the biggness of my family’s gratitude toward the fire crews and support during this Gap fire. We’ve heard how close our house came to burning and without the skill and dedication of the men and women willing to work in those extreme conditions, we would have lost everything. The lives of people are contained in those sometimes frail shelters. I am so grateful for the personal fortitude of every one of the firefighters who continued to fight to save MY house. Our HOMES. thank you thank you thank you is all I can say.

| Thankfully, I kept seeing all the adorable firefighters at Five Points on their break at Starbucks since the fire began. I have to say, I was reminded time and time again that it’s TRUE what they say…firefighters are HOT.
Besides that, I just want to tell you how relieved and thrilled I am that you’ve been able to hold the line and keep the fires contained. All-in-all, things seem to be going fairly well and the weather is on your side. I am SO THANKFUL to you for saving our fair hamlet of Santa Barbara. I speak for the fair maidens and we are all delighted.
I am all for the idea of us having a big parade in honor of your heroic efforts. Of course, all 1,139 of you would have to wear your cute uniforms. We would love that, too.
With Loads of Appreciation

| We are writing this note from Las Vegas, Nevada to send our deepest thank you to all the firefighters and volunteers who are battling the Gap Fire in the Goleta area.
We heard from some very dear friends tonight for the first time since the fire started. Their place was saved due to extraordinary efforts of the best firefighters there are…YOU.
Thanks to the unyielding and tireless efforts of all of you battling this Gap Fire, we have learned that our friends are well, and that their property was saved.
The harrowing stories that we heard are unbelievable. There are no words that can convey our appreciation and thanks for the courageous efforts of all of the firefighters.
You all are in our prayers. And know all of Santa Barbara is thanking you in their hearts and prayers, too.

Everyday of this fire I have said how much gratitude I feel to the very brave firefighters on the Gap fire, so now I can express myself to you directly. The scariness that we felt on Thursday evening as we packed the car to possibly evacuate, when the sky turned black, the wind raged, and loud helicopters flew overhead, I now realize are your constant working conditions on these wildfires. All of our hopes were transmitted to you all, and you came through so well by protecting Goleta and Santa Barbara. Protecting homes and the lives within is a huge undertaking, but you did it, and we are eternally grateful. We will never forget what you did on these days. Thank you from our whole hearts…..
You all are our heroes……

I was on the phone talking to a friend in Goleta when the fire started and he remarked that there was a blaze on the hills. And I remembered watching the Painted Cave fire come rushing down the hills and complete panic take over our community. And shock!
Thank God that the weather conditions were different and countless number of firefighters came quickly to the aid of our community. I’m grateful for the news coverage which assured us that our friends and relatives were relatively safe. My heart goes out to the people who were close and had to live with the anxiety of not knowing if their homes and loved ones were safe.
I’m glad that the Goleta fireworks were cancelled. It would have only added to traffic congestion and our forces did not need to be further stressed.
It seems our whole community pulled together to help.As well as assistance from outside sources. As a former president of Goleta Beautiful, I’m proud of all the teamwork I have read about during this time of disaster.
Sorry that the gawkers got in the way. That is sad.

My sister lives at the Trout Club. She is disabled with Lou Gehrig’s Disease. She has a terrible prognosis and death sentence in this disease, yet she is so happy to be living in the beautiful surroundings in the foothills and wakes up elated because of where she gets to live. She would be devastated to lose her cabin and I am so grateful for the intense stand that I know the fire fighters had to make to save her little community in the mountains. I am overwhelmed with gratitude and awe for your selfless work to help others at the expense of your own health and safety. You are truly heroes.

As politicians and economics wreck havoc in our current world…firefighters have given us hope. What a blessing you are to all of us. There is no way to thank the hundreds of firefighters who risked their lives for our protection and safety. We live very near the Franklin Ranch Road ( off Fairview) where many firefighters have told us great efforts were made on Thursday evening as the winds up higher were blowing at 50 mph. Thank you, thank you, thank you. You remain in our hearts and our prayers. The world is definitely a better place because of you!

Thank you to all involved in the GAP firefighting efforts! We have deep respect for all you who dedicate your lives and careers to protecting and teaching us. I learn more with each fire about what I and my family can do to be prepared and how we can make our home as protectable as possible for the day fire comes our way. Your jobs are so challenging — I feel the least I can do is to follow the firefighters’ wishlist of ways to help — such as leaving a light on and leaning a ladder against the house to reach the roof. Although we are currently not threatened by fire in our neighborhood, having lived through 1977’s Sycamore fire and the 1990 Painted Cave fire, we are aware of the power of fire and the unpredictability involved. We understand this fire is far from over. We wish all the agencies involved continued success in taking on each challenge the GAP fire brings you. And, in addition to all our best to the heroes on the front line, we wish all those citizens, ranchers, and homeowners affected by this fire a safe return home.

P.S. And thanks to all the firefighters for always cheerfully waving to our kids when you drive by! Seeing a firetruck (particularly off duty) makes our day!

I’ve always have had respect and awe for firefighters. I’ve known family members of firefighters whose pride glow in their eyes and who explain it to us laypeople by saying it is a calling. Like the priesthood, you’ve been chosen for this work. I grew up in Santa Barbara and the first bad fire I remember is the Coyote Fire of 1964. My family lives in the foothills and there have been more than enough scares; and you were there. I moved to New York and am a survivor of 9/11. I remember evacuating from lower Manhattan while truck after truck after truck drove in. One firefighter ran the length of the Holland Tunnel to fight. They commemorate his memory with an annual run through the Holland Tunnel. And you don’t just fight fires, you are called for everything! Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

We have lived in our home in the North Patterson area for 30 years and were heartsick at the thought of losing it. Thanks to the bravery and dedication of the firefighters that worked the lines and those that did structure protection we are safe. Without the firefighters and everyone else who worked on fighting this fire the devastation would have been enormous. Thank you doesn’t really cut it, but know from the bottom of our hearts we appreciate all that you did and will continue to do.

For the firefighters who did a fantastic job and kept us safe! Yea! Whoo-hoo!
For the Fire Dept, Los Padres, Sheriff, County, Board of Supervisors, State, Governor, federal – and all their staff members — all those who make the decisions when and where to send in resources, getting help, and keeping the public informed. Thanks for the extra help!!
For the media and the fantastic Internet resources — my best source of info throughout this fire! (Special thanks to SB Independent for coverage and specific information and maps no one else had, and far more timely than anyone else, and the long hours and great photos of Ray Ford!)
For the Red Cross — always there!
For generous family and neighbor hospitality, who has provided many of us temporary homes!
For Direct Relief and the masks!
For all those who prayed and showed compassion - including the clerks in the stores, co-workers, neighbors, people at church, family.
For the angels behind the scenes, helping everyone!
For a Loving God who can bring good out of every bad situation!
Dibby

Without your amazing hard work, thousands of homes (and possibly many lives) would surely have been lost. Thank you for your tireless efforts, and for working so hard to protect Santa Barbara from this fire. The fire was so very close to our home, and as we evacuated, burning embers were raining down on our street. Without your help, our house would be gone. We thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

As the fire progressed towards my home in the North Patterson area Thursday evening, my main thought was for the safety of my family and leaving immediately. I truly thought my home, which is the one I grew up in and am now raising my own children in, could burn down. It felt so good to return home yesterday and see that the fire was far away. You have done a wonderful job, thank you so, so much for your efforts and from keeping this fire away from our homes!

Without your constant days and nights of toiling, our cities and homes in the hills would have been lost. Thank you for all the efforts you made to save Goleta, Santa Barbara, and all the homes of our loved ones in the hills. Our appreciation and gratitude is boundless.

I am fortunate enough to live downtown, but know others that live in the fire zone.
I would like to extend a very heartfelt thank you to all the firefighters, from our area and elsewhere. Thank you for risking your lives and taking time away from your families to protect our community.

My home has not been and is not threatened by this fire, even though I can see the flames from my driveway. My heart goes out to those that have had to evacuate over the last few days, but I feel joy knowing that one of you stands guard at each of their houses until the threat passes. How can one possibly thank you enough for “just doing your job”?
You guys and gals are awesome.

To all the men and women helping put out the GAP fire in SB: a heartfelt “thank you!” We all notice the amazing job and sacrifcing you have done to save many people’s homes this past week. For those of us here during the Painted Cave fire, we never forgot the heroic efforts, and your work for us this year will always be remembered. You are heroes. Thanks. Melissa

We add our heartfelt thanks to the expressions of gratitude from our neighbors in Goleta and elsewhere in Santa Barbara County (and further afield). Firefighters who have come from near and far, risking your lives to put out this extremely threatening fire, we know you have already accomplished what seemed at some points to be impossible. From our home south of Cathedral Oaks and east of Fairview, we had a wide view of the proliferating areas of fire on the ridge. We took your warnings (unofficial, as pertains to our immediate street) seriously and packed our family’s mementos. Thank you so very much for the homes you have saved so far and for your continued hard work for our community. We send our deepest wishes for your safety, now and in the future. To all of you who are working so tirelessly and courageously on the Gap fire, thank you, thank you. Words just can’t sum up much you are appreciated for your efforts. I live up in Washington state, but grew up in Goleta and still have family and friends there. It’s been hard to be so far away but comforting to know that so many of you are taking care of this fire as best you can. Brings back so many memories of the Painted Cave fire when many of you did the same. You are all heroes.
We’re praying for you and thinking about you.

In the words of Kurt Vonnegut, “I can think of no more stirring symbol of man’s humanity to man than a fire engine.” But the work of a fire fighter is more than humane - it is an unassuming act of selflessness and generosity, a kind of unconditional love for the community.
The men and women fighting the fires across California have shown a broad sense of community in their cooperation. Troops have come from all over the state to preserve our homes, our forests, and our lives. The collaboration of so many different individuals is inspiring, and will not be forgotten.
Thank you for upholding a bond of humanity that far surpasses our instincts for self-preservation. Thank you for your tireless work. Thank you for your gift to us and our community.

The fire burned within a quarter of a mile of my daughter’s house, they were evacuated for three days and were able to return Saturday afternoon. I have always respected firefighters, but I have a new appreciation for your dedication and hard work. My three year old granddaughter said “Grandma, my house almost burned up”. Thank you for saving her house. You all deserve a hug. Thank you for protecting us.

It is with my whole heart that I thank you for risking your lives to protect those that I love, and it is with my whole heart that I send strength, and energy to each one of you.

You always play it down and claim to be just regular guys and girls doing your jobs, but we true regular guys and girls know that your courage, your dedication to a community bigger than yourselves, your indomitable, indefatigable spirit, your incredible STRENGTH make you a breed apart.

Thank you for your intelligence, your resourcefulness, your dedication and, above all, your courage in fighting the fire for all of us who could not. We are all so grateful to you for facing a constantly changing, shifting, difficult and dangerous situation and handling all of it rapidly and effectively, containing the flames and saving a community from losing its heart. Thank you also for keeping yourselves safe as you kept us safe. Without you, it could have easily become the next big disaster on the evening news. I want to thank all the women and men who are fighting the fires and helping to save the Neighborhoods in Santa Barbara, CA. I am in Houston, Texas and my Parents are in the middle of Patterson and Turnpike, off of Ribera. It is very diffucult to be so far away from my family in times of need. But I know that we have the best firefighters in the US. My Grandpa was a Captain of Fire station #1 Don J. Dunne, I know he would be proud of the fine job you are doing. I will keep all of you in my prayers.

As we fled Thursday night, we could only think of getting out. The sun was blood red from smoke, and we could see the flames on the ridge. Friday I came back briefly by walking in and the helicopters were overhead and as I walked out, the retardant was being dropped just west of the Trout Club. It was an amazing and frightening scene. Saturday we were allowed to drive back to our home. I walked up the road and at every driveway, every turn of the road, there were firefighters and CHP officers from all over the State. Downey, Long Beach, Gardena, Santa Barbara, San Luis Obispo, Los Angeles, Hesperia and Idaho, just to name a few. Many were “spotters” scanning for hot-spots that might erupt again. In the canyon below, there were hand crews and bulldozers, and above, retardant and water was being used to douse hot-spots. Each of these professionals was calm and competent. They graciously answered my questions, or just let me stand there and listen to their radio communications. Fire engines were in all the driveways on the road.
I also wanted to thank other Santa Barbara professionals. The Sheriff’s office, the police and the various others, including probation officers, who were at the intersection stopping non –residents. The list of heros should also include folks like Tom Adams and Ray Ford and other “civilians” who were able to help with communication and report to the rest of us what we so desperately needed to know. With deep gratitude, Renée deJong.

Since the fire began, there was a sense of urgent emergency in the air. We could smell with the smoke and ash and we could see with the mountains aflame. We could only watch the fire and gaze in amazement, fear and helplessness. The size of the orange flames in the distance at dusk was a reminder of how small we are as people and that mother nature could do whatever she wanted. It was a matter of chance where the wind would push this force of nature.
I just moved here a couple of weeks ago and have never lived in a place where wildfire was a real threat. From the first night the fire, I stayed up and watched the surreal flames creep closer to our place in Ellwood Canyon. I felt unsafe, threatened, scared for all the orchards and farms and homes in the surrounding area. The fear and panic increased when we were asked to evacuate and thought this was a sign that the area just might burn. As firetrucks began to come in from counties near and far, I immediately felt a sense of calm, seeing those “supermen” and “superwomen” who would be protecting us from this growing fire. The sight of the helicopter pilots dropping water non-stop throughout the day over the flames was inspiring. Their display of courage, endurance and precision is incredible!
When our evacuation lifted to a warning, we returned home and had a firetruck (#38) from Roubidoux, Riverside County, in the driveway. The three firemen were charming, friendly, intelligent and obviously extremely brave and dedicated. They had just come straight from a fire they had been fighting for several weeks in another part of California. As they shared their knowledge of the nature of fire, told stories from the field, and described their home-life and families, I finally understood just how intense their jobs were and how they put their lives and health on the line to protect communities. We stood there on the ridge of the canyon watching the fire burning a couple ridges away, about 1 mile from the house. “Do you think our place will burn?” I asked. “Not on my watch,” reassured one of them. It was so nice talking with them that afternoon and hearing about “life” as a firefighter. Even though the fire was hovering close by, I felt very safe in their presence.
I sit here back in my home, feeling such gratitude for all the GAP firefighters who have helped and continue to help fight this ruthless fire, I feel like I can speak for all those who were evacuated and those who had friends who were evacuated, thank you so very much for helping keep our homes safe and making us feel safe with your courageous effort out there! You guys are amazing and we are forever grateful for how much energy you have given to protect use and our homes! Thank you thank you thank you!

I watched the fire bombers over the flames on the hills behind us, then closed my eyes and called for all good angels to come and take the fire away; to save we mortals from the horror of the flames. The angels heard. Thank you to all you angels wearing boots who answered; you who faced the fire and made it stop. Know that you are loved and blessed.

Dear firefighters, one and all:
I was a small child when I stood with my parents on our back porch in “old town” Goleta and watched the flames of the Refugio Fire in the distance. My parents were calm, and I didn’t understand enough to be afraid because I was too little.
Fast forward to July 1, 2008. I could see flames on the hills from my back porch again, but I slept, knowing it was small. July 2, 2008 was the shocker of my life. I stood on Fairview Overpass at 101, staring in the face of the possible destruction of my home town. After the Painted Cave fire, I realized only too well that even though my area was not even in the “warning” zone, that could change in a minute. Those Gap flames seemed to be everywhere and I prayed for my friends on upper Fairview and Patterson, as well as my church on Cathedral Oaks. I did not sleep well that night!
I am so grateful that you put so much of your strength, dedication and effort into fighting the Gap fire. I prayed for you, too, that you wouldn’t be hurt, and that you would hang in there until air support came. I wish there were something I could give to all of you who fought this fire, but my words are all I have. God bless you all for the job you have done, and for your family’s sacrifice so you can be there for us.
Because of you, Goleta is still its old self, and I am grateful. Thank you!

My parents and brother live off of Patterson and they have been relaying information to me about the shear presence of fire personal that have descended on N Patterson in the early stages of the fire. Living through the Painted Cave and recent San Diego fires you certainly have much appreciation for the work you guys do in tense times for small and large communities. I walked up from my home in El Encanto Heights to the parking lot at Dos Pueblos today with some bags of plums and peaches from our trees. Already there were pies and boxes of fruit, balloons and thank you posters from others in the neighborhood. We are all so grateful to the firefighters for protecting our homes, even at risk to themselves.
Many of them are away from their families who I am sure must be worrying about them. Be careful, and stay safe.

Thank you for all you have done for us and our community. Baking you cupcakes, cookies and coffeecakes are but a small but concrete way we can let you know that we appreciate all you are doing for us.We think about you up there on the fire lines, so close to our homes here in Santa Barbara and throughout the State, and are powerless to anything other than pray, bake, volunteer at the Red Cross and of course stay out of your way. I have seen your trucks throughout our city and notice the distances that you have traveled. Go with God! And, stay safe.

Dear Firefighters,
This is just another voice in the wilderness thanking you for your heroic efforts in the Gap fire.
We see fire trucks from so far away. Thank you.
On this holiday weekend when you could be with your family, duty came first.
Whether you actively worship God or not, I believe God loves you and is looking out for you.
We will never forget your bravery against big odds now, and in days to come.
May God bless you and yours abundantly.

Thanks for saving our homes and our watersheds and our wildlife, so many times over the years. Many many thanks, you are true heroes–believe it!!

Dear Firefighters,
I can’t thank you enough for all that you do and continue to do. My husband, my ten month old son and myself own a home in San Marcos Trout Club and know that things there are looking bleak, but we so appreciate all your heroic efforts and selflessness. Please be as safe as possible, follow your instincts, and please protect yourselves and one another. My prayers and thoughts are with you and I would love to drop off some home cooked meals when we are able to come back home. Currently, my family and I are staying with family in British Columbia due to air quality and the mandatory evacuation. When I return I promise you some home made cooking. Good luck and keep safe.

We lost our home in the Painted Cave Fire and I thought it could go again this time. My parents and brothers stayed to defend their home and firemen were there at the times that were most crucial. We just moved up to Painted Cave at the end of the Zaca fire last year - so this is the first year we were in the midst of fire. We could see the flames from our deck Wednesday night - it’s amazing how little perspective you have at night when the flames are 20 - 60 feet high!! It seemed so close. Anyway - we are back in our home this afternoon and are so grateful for all the work you have done to make this happen - as well as keeping everyone else safe at the same time!! I hope you get to go home soon and sleep in your own beds and have an afternoon or five off!!
Many, many thanks,

Thank you for all you are doing. It is because of you that I can safely sit in my house right now. My fear and anxiety level hit the roof Thursday night, the winds on El Sueno were howling so bad and the black smoke was surrounding us at an alarming pace, it seemed like hell was knocking once again. I experienced this once before with the Painted Cave fire. I truly believed Thursday night was going to be a repeat. I was shocked and grateful Friday morning – I can’t believe the job you have all done… WOW.
Forever grateful and in awe of the dedication of others.

Thanks to all of you firefighting men and women who during these past days of the Gap fire have ensured that — amazingly — no homes have been lost. I know you must be exhausted, and hope you can rest soon — a rest well earned through your hard work and caring for others’ safety and security. I was on the phone with a friend in the Ellwood Canyon area when she said there were firefighters (from Long Beach) in her front yard waiting to defend the house if needed. (She could see flames nearby.) I commented, “You’ve gotta love them,” to which she replied, “Oh, my gosh!” I think that says it all.

How can anyone thank you sufficiently for “doing your work”. What you are doing is so much more than that. And while the pay in dollars will never balance the sacrifice and strength and courage and will that each of you give, there are greater blessings that will manifest in your lives because you have made such a difference in the lives of so many. So, please accept our thanks for all you do and all you are. Colin and Leslie Clark

I am still in awe of the firefighters and helicopter pilots who worked on the La Patera Ranch portion of the fire. Thank you for protecting all the homes between Lake Los Carneros and Cathedral Oaks. The police who were directing traffic at the intersection of La Patera Lane and Cathedral Oaks had their hands full with non-residence folk pouring in for a look. Not appreciated by us were the comments like, “You think this is a fire? This is nothing; you should have seen the San Diego fires,” the people who brought lounge chairs and refreshments to camp along Cathedral Oaks for “the show,” and the people who thought it was their right to block residents’ driveways.
GREATLY appreciated, in addition to the firefighters from all over the state, were the ranch hands and owners of La Patera Ranch, the neighborhood’s special friend, ranger John at Stow Grove Park, and all of the neighbors who kept watch for several long nights, passing on information and offers to help others.
Many thanks to all of you,
Diane

I speak for my whole street (Danbury Court-off of Berkeley Road and Fairview-south of Cathedral Oaks) when I thank you wonderful firefighters for saving our homes and the homes of our friends and neighbors who live north of Cathedral Oaks. We could look out our upstairs window, overlooking Fairview Gardens farm, and could see the flames approaching our neighborhood, getting about 1-2 miles away. We could watch the planes and helicopters flying back and forth continually since Tuesday night. We did not evacuate, but were ready to. Some of the people on our street did evacuate. Your jobs and your commitment to helping people make you all heroes and heroines. We have enormous respect for you. Thanks very much.

Dear firefighters,
These words of the poet Stephen Spender say so well how grateful we are to your sacrifice,
your courage, your expertise, your incredible exertion, your victories:
“I think continually of those who are truly great.
. . . .
See how their names are feted by the waving grass
And by the streamers of white cloud
and whispers of wind in the listening sky.
The names of those who in their lives fought for life,
Who wore at their hearts the fire’s centre.
Born of the sun they traveled a short while toward the sun
And left the vivid air signed with their honor.”
You will leave the mountains, the vivid air, the neighborhoods of Goleta and the whole south coast signed with your honor. Thank you for coming here and keeping the inferno from our homes and our city.
With great gratitude, Diana Hunt

Many thanks to all the emergency responders - local and from elsewhere, professional and volunteer, government and nonprofit/NGO, everyone else who has helped in some way.
Our local agencies work extraordinarily well together in emergencies. This cooperation has impressed me for many years, but both last year in the Zaca fire and currently on the Gap fire, joint command officials from elsewhere have mentioned how remarkable it is.
And many of the firefighters who have come from other agencies to help us, must be exhausted from fighting the other wildfires throughout the state. I hope they already know how much we appreciate them, but it can’t hurt to help repeating: Thank you, thank you, thank you for working to save our community and our wildlands.

I’ve been watching this fire with high anxiety since it began, as it has threatened the homes of many friends and loved ones, the ranch where my horse friends live, and the face of our city as we know it…. I live across the city, and see the fire on the hills every night. And every night I see, too, the tiny blinking lights, spread across the ridges, of the engines and crews who are there, in the dark, protecting us from this unpredictable creature. I never knew, till this week, how reassuring a tiny blinking light on the mountain could be.
So to all the crews out there fighting the Gap fire - thank you for your efforts, and for your tiny blinking lights, out there on the mountainside, giving us hope that things will be fine.

Thank you for risking your lives to save our homes. If I could thank all of you in person, I would jump at the chance.

Let me first thank you to all the brave people…..fire fighters, administration, police, volunteers, media folks, and community, for the relentless fight against the raging fires. It is the first such close experience that I and my family had. But it was so reassuring all the time to know that you people were there. I have closely followed the events, and I must say that the near round-the-clock information provided by the administration, and media has been just great.
I am very sure that we will be on top of this adversary very soon.
The community salutes to you all , and we are proud of you!!
God bless you !!

Thank you deeply for the incredible effort and stamina it takes from you all to help save lives, structures, and other living creatures. It must really test you, as a person, to work these very long days and nights, day after day, week after week. You guys and gals are amazing!

These days, words like “heroes” and “heroism” are all too easily used, but they certainly apply to the firefighters who have been and are battling this very dangerous fire so effectively.
What you guys are protecting is a lot more than houses, as these structures contain so many irreplaceable mementos and represent so much to all of us.
Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Dear Firefighters,
I am a local SB resident currently out of the country. I have been staying up to date on all your progress and am so grateful to you. I used to live on West Camino last year, but moved after the Zaca fires encroached, in order to avoid dealing with any pressing fire dangers.
I have many friends and loved ones up on that hill and I SO appreciate all your efforts and amazing artistry around this fire.
Have been moved to tears a few times.
Many thanks,
Romi -

Thousands of “thank yous” to all the firefighters and their support personnel from far and near for all of their hard work. My daughter and my friends live on the mountain side of Goleta. Without you they might have lost their homes.

We live in the Rancho del Ciervo community right up against the orchards and fully expected to return to a “burned home”. We did not expect to come back to my home and see it “untouched”. The firefighters did a miraculous job of protecting our homes and for that we will be ever grateful. We were pleasantly surprised Saturday morning while at Starbucks on Fairview, while speaking with a large group of firefighters from all over Los Angeles County we discovered the very crew that had saved our home and that of our neighbors were from the Glendale Fire Department, the very team who had saved our Glendale home in the 1999 Glendale fire! Wow! Talk about the irony in that! To all of the first responders who fought the fires to save our homes and communities, to those of you who provided protection via barriers and patrolling our neighborhoods, to the families of first responders who must worry every time they go out, to the fire departments from all over California who came to save our community…and to the Glendale Fire Department who have now saved two of my homes – THANK YOU!

On July 4th most Americans were watching fireworks but I was watching firefighters. I had been relentlessly monitoring the fire from my home at the intersection of San Antonio Creek Road and San Marcos Pass since the fire started. On the morning of July 4th the flames had advanced to only 2 ridges away. I knew if we got heavy afternoon sundowner winds it would send that fire down the hill with record speed taking out my house and 100s of others with it. My home burned down in the Painted Cave fire and I know how fast a fire can move with the help of heavy sundowner wind gusts. I watched as planes and helicopters started to fly in with air drops all morning. As the sundowners started picking up around 3pm a DC10 flew in and dropped about a mile of red fire retardant. It was clearly a direct hit. What an awesome sight to see on the 4th of July! I watched as the black smoke turned to white and the flames disappeared. The aerial bombardment went on all day and they continued to make runs until the sun went down. By 5PM the wind gusts had really picked up and I was ready for evacuation but it was not necessary, the fire had been reduced to a few scattered hot spots on the east flank of the blaze by then. The firefighters have saved my house from the air. I waved at them from my deck but I don’t think they saw me so I just wanted to say to all the firefighters on the ground and especially in the air, good job, thank you and Happy Independence Day!!

to the men and women who have worked their butts off for the last five days so that our homes might be spared, from the hand lines to the phone lines to the command center. Thank you all.

One of my greatest teachers taught me, “When in doubt, go with gratitude.” There is no doubt that our community is filled with gratitude toward the brave firefighters that have put their lives on the line fighting the Gap Wildland Fire. This is not a place for map updates, or evacuation order status, but a place for people to share their thanks with those who are serving and protecting our homes, neighborhoods, families and friends.
It is my hope that at some point the content of this site will be printed and delivered to each engine company, strike and incident team that contributed their effort and energy to fighting this fire.
Please share your gratitude with them. One line, a whole page, it doesn’t matter how much or how little you write, but please write something. We all have something to be thankful for, not the least of which is that thus far the professionalism of those in command and on the front lines has prevented any serious damage to life or property.
